Yutyrannus was genus a Proceratosaurid Tyrannosaurid theropod dinosaur from early Cretaceous China. Yutyrannus is the largest known dinosaur that has direct evidence of feathers, showing that even larger Theropod dinosaurs could have had feathered plumage. The genus contains a single known species, Y. Huali.

Physiology[]

Yutyrannus was a medium sized bipedal, predatory theropod, with 2 long legs, and relatively large arms with 3 fingers, each tipped with a claw. It's head was adorned with 2 crests aboe it's eyes, while it's snout had a large midline crest, although it was still smaller than that of some it's relatives, such as the earlier Proceratosaurus or Guanlong. It's the largest animal which has direct evidence of feathers, which were long, up to 20 centimeters (7.9 in), and filamentous. The feathers may have covered the entire body and served in regulating temperature, considering the rather cold climate of early Cretaceous northeastern China.

The animal was one of the largest members of it's group up until that point, although it was most likely smaller than the Sinotyrannus. Still, it was far more robustly build than most of it's relatives, being closer in proportion to other similairly sized theropods such as Allosaurus. Due to it's numerous fossils, it's ontogeny is somewhat understood, with younger individuals having longer arms and legs, but smaller skulls, not to disimilairly what is known about Tyrannosaurus.

Yutyrannus would have been one of the 2 large carnivores in the Yixian formation, alongside a yet undescribed species of theropod. It's possible Yutyrannus would have hunted in small packs or atleast form occasional mobs to take down larger animals such as the Dongbeititan, as there's a fossil of 3 Yutyrannus preserved together in a quarry where Sauropod remains have been found. There were some other Sauropod hunting dinosaurs which likely also possesed pack behaviour, such as the Giganotosaurus relative, Mapusaurus. That for now however remains only speculation. Not much else can be deduced from it's fossils.
