Tape Trunks (Tainiacortex fibra) are a species of fungus found in the 2021 game, The Gunk. They can be broken apart and collected for use as construction materials.
Description[]
Tape trunks grow into a stalk-like shape, roughly the height of a Human's chest. Their stalk is orange or brown in hue and hardened using a bark-like substance for protection, and adds to its difficulty in removal from the substrate by would-be predators. They are known to attract small, gold-colored insects to small filaments protruding from the top of the stalk; these may be small fruiting bodies akin to flowers for pollination, but this is guesswork.
They are deeply sensitive to the proximity and leaching effect of Gunk and will enter a dormant state, disallowing explorers from harvesting them until any nearby Gunk is removed from the environment.
It is mostly composed of mannose, glucose, and galactose. Like other floral organisms on their home planet, if the encounter Gunk then they with and enter a dormant state until the infection in the area is systematically removed.
In-game usage[]
Tape trunks can be found in a mold spore-like state, covered in a layer of bark. Rani can harvest 8 fiber components from the organism by grabbing it with their cybernetic arm and pulling away from the fungus in a manner similar to many other large spore-like organisms they are able to interact with.
When pulled too far, the tape trunk will explode and leave 8 separate pieces of the fiber material, which the player then must suck up with their vacuum attachment. Any tape trunk already harvest remains harvested for the rest of the game and will not regenerate.

- In the game, it is mistakenly listed as a plant in its scan dialog for the encyclopedia. However, fungi are not plants but are their own entirely separate kingdom. This is presumably a typo or simply a fact unknown to the developers.
