Superphilander is a supposed primitive species of extinct opossum that formerly lived in South America.
It is the ancestor of genuses Chrinoctes and Philander.
Populations of the species were widespread over Panama and western Brazil. It's probable that Superphilander had different populations, that evolved into different species.
Individuals from Panama were likely to adapt to a life of water, similar to the modern day water opossum. Other individuals would adapt to an arboreal lifestyle, similar to modern day Philander opossums. It is probably an ultimate descendant of Protodidelphia.
