A Sand Scorpion (Sandosukopio mistrovius) is a species indigenous to the Mist Continent on the planet Gaia. They are one of four known scorpion species on the planet, the others being the Desertpedes of the Earthgift Shrine, the Scorpions of Marsh Cave and Mount Gulg, and the Sea Scorpions of the Shrunken Shrine.

Physiology[]

Sand Scorpion (FFIX) Skin

Sand Scorpions are gargantuan arachnids standing roughly as tall as a short Human. They have evolved sharp, conical teeth in lieu of a set of shredding pedipalps and mandibles while their eyes have become pinhole eyes, similar to those seen in nautiloids. This indicates that they do not have particularly great vision, as while their eye structure can be considered to be highly developed, still lacks a solid lens. This means that since their eye is open to the environment it only allows for the creation of correspondingly simple imagery.

Although they have lost their mandibles in their mouth region, they interestingly have gained a similar-looking structure on their stingers. While this new feature does not serve the same purpose as mandibles would, it is logical that they help the stinger deal more damage in order to deal with their significantly larger prey when compared to smaller scorpion species. They have lost half of their sets of legs, and only move on four armored limbs.

Thanks to adaptation to a difficult, desert environment, Sand Scorpions naturally absorb water which they retain and subsist off of to prevent eventual dessication. As such, water magic is ill-advised against the species as it will in no way harm them. However, they cannot handle frozen water in the form of ice. This is likely due to it being such an extreme temperature variant from their norm that they more easily freeze to death. They are immune to virii, and their tough exoskeletal structure prevents crushing gravitational forces from being a concern, either. They are also level-headed, and they can neither be confused or be affected by a berserker rage. For unknown reasons, the Vanish spell will not work on them, either.

Ecology[]

The Sand Scorpions are borne from the mists produced by the Iifa Tree, but even with this in mind, they are found only in specific locations, namely the trees on the path to Cleyra, as well as the Pinnacle Rocks. Perhaps their most common habitat is the Vube Desert.
