The petals of salt lilies are hard, sharp and waxy, this protects the seeds from being eaten by gulls. The roots are buried deep in the seabed The only animals able to break the hard petals are the ocean howlers. They arent a main foodsource, but they only eat it to use as a recreational hallucinogenic drug.
