The Qinling Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca qinlingensis) is one of two known subspecies of giant panda. They are restricted to the Qinling Mountains within an elevation range between 4,300 – 9,800 ft (1,300–3,000 meters). They are noter-known black-and-white cousins by their dark brown and light brown fur. They also have a smaller skull and overall size. Only 200-300 are believed to exist in the wild, though this is thought to be a fifth of the total panda population in the world.
Their coloration is thought to be the consequence of inbreeding, as the population is closed off from any genetic variation, which may have led to the preservation of such a mutation.

On August 30, 1989, a female Qinling named Dan-Dan was captured and brought to the Xi'an Zoo in China, with plans to mate her with a regular giant panda; mating proved to be successful. Although her offspring was born black-and-white, but reportedly started fading to brown as it aged. According to other reports she gave birth to three cubs who all died shortly after being born. Dan-Dan died in 2000.
