"A lot of pent-up kinetic energy inside the glowing fruitbody. An energy spark should trigger the release of its potential. Once the bulbous top is removed, the stem should yield a new one pronto."
— Encyclopedia entry, The Gunk

Mycelium Coils are a species of fungus, commonly used as an exploration aid in the 2021 game, The Gunk. When their fruiting bodies are placed into high-energy fissures, they rapidly grow to much larger, capped forms which large fauna species can actually use to traverse the environment.

Description[]

Naturally, mycelium coils grow into a stalk-like shape, roughly about Human height. Their stem appears woody and brown, and this grips onto a glowing fruiting body where the fungus stores a large amount of kinetic energy that it has gathered. This fruit glows orange and color, and will oftentimes attract small, gold-colored insects; it is unknown if these insects pollinate the organism or if they feed upon them. It also develops a small, seemingly hardened cap on the top of this fruiting body. They are fast-growing, and can produce a new fruiting body should it lose its current one within a matter of seconds.

However, should a mycelium fruiting body end up in one of the numerous energy fissures that dot the landscape, it will develop into an entirely new appearance: Here it will grow a much larger stem and will grow multiple giant caps which are capable of supporting significant weight upon them, able to hold a Human-sized individual without any adverse affects to the organism. In this stage however they may be sterile, as no recorded energy-overdosed mycelium coil has ever been witnessed to have its own fruiting bodies.

It is mostly composed of glucans, chitin, and glycoproteins. Like other floral organisms on their home planet, if the encounter Gunk then they with and enter a dormant state until the infection in the area is systematically removed.

In-game usage[]

Mycelium coils can be found in a mold spore-like state with a small plate-like cap attached to a ball on a stem. Once Rani has upgraded her cybernetic arm once (mandatory to progress through the game any further), she will be able to use the arm's vacuum power to grab hold of the ball (the fruiting body). From here she can pull back against it to forcibly remove the fruiting body from the stem. No matter how she proceeds, the fungus will generate a new fruiting body within seconds, even while the original one remains in play. Rani will remain attached to this 'ball' and can travel with it, but will be unable to jump. However, she can throw the ball a short distance, releasing her from being connected to it at which point she can run and jump as normal. Her ultimate goal is to take these balls to various bright green glowing pools known as energy fissures, which will allow the ball to grow into a large mushroom that Rani can then use to jump across areas. These energy fissures will not open up until after any nearby Gunk in the region is cleaned up.
