The Mothula, also known as the Skull Woods Mothula (Gamoth skelettwald) is a species of giant moth indigenous to the Dark World, a neighboring dimension adjacent to the kingdom of Hyrule. They are also a natural pest to bees, and bees will attack a Mothula on sight. This may indicate that they either feed on honey or perhaps bee larvae.
This species of Mothula likes to nest in deep cavernous regions, which can include dungeons. While aggressive by nature, they have little in the way of offensive techniques: They are only capable of swiftly fluttering around in an erratic pattern while projecting energy rings in a spread pattern. Adventurers forced into an encounter can use fire to burn away their combustible wing scales to deal fatal injury to the creatures. A sword is more useful but also puts the wielder more in harm's way.
Background history[]
One Mothula was encountered an incarnation of Link awoken after the Imprisoning War, where it had taken up residence within the Skull Woods, a labyrinthine dungeon deep within Skeleton Forest. Here, it took up roost in a room filled with conveyor belts and blade traps. When Link began to do battle with the creature, the room activated but it is unknown if this particular Mothula possessed mechanokinetic powers, the room was motion activated, or it was mere coincidence.
Legend states that this Mothula had once been a beautiful woman who had become jealous over another girl's appearance. This led her to enter the Dark World to find the golden power to become even more beautiful but entering the dimension transformed her into a Mothula due to her envious nature. However, this legend has not been proven to be true.
