The Mogwai is a fictional species of immortal marsupial that originated from the Gremlins Universe. In the film's novelization, they were genetically engineered creatures, created by alien scientist Mogturmen. In the animated series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, they were created by Fixi and Nuwa.
Biology[]
Appearance[]
They are furry creatures with pink pointy ears, three fingers on each hand. They are harmed by light and turn into Gremlins if fed after midnight.
As Gremlins[]
As Gremlins, they are small destructively mischievous reptilian creatures. A Mogwai shifts to this stage if it is allowed to consume food after midnight, causing the Mogwai to conceal itself in a cocoon and metamorphize into a Gremlin. They're intelligent creatures, very capable of operating technology. Like the Mogwais, they're highly sensitive to light and reproduce asexually by means of spontaneously generating new Gremlins whenever they're exposed to water.
Reproduction[]
When they get wet, they reproduce via budding. With that in mind, it can be assumed they have no genitals.
Notes[]
- They are based on a monster from Chinese mythology of the same name (translating to "demon" or "monster"), often described as either a fairy or a demon, similar to the European imp. Said creatures mate during rain storms, which could be the inspiration for mogwai budding when wet.
- Despite being sapient creatures, they can be owned as pets.
- They resemble a combination of Ewoks and Yoda's species.
- They have a built-in emotional principle preventing them from killing each other. They seem to shed this as gremlins though.
Taxonomy History[]
- Before June 2, 2023, the family name was Reptoprimatidae (Reptoprimates) but was then changed to Scincoprimatidae (Skink-like reptoprimates) as their facial structure is similar to a skink's facial structure.
- As of 2024, they are now understood as marsupials, similar to koalas.
