Mer Creatures are seal-like aquatic primates that evolved in the future in the same alternate timeline as the Future Shark. They are known to inhabit the English coastline, and possibly other locations. It is unknown which species of primate they may have evolved from, though one individual, Nick Cutter, suggested that they could have evolved from Humans.
Mer Creatures possess powerful arms and bodies with hindlegs adapted into a fluked tail. They have been reported to have weakened skulls, though interestingly they can bash against doors yet are knocked out or even killed by rocks being dropped on them.
They are known to sing, and can be drawn out by recordings of their calls.
History[]
Dark Ages[]
Due to their body structure, it is retroactively believed that these creatures slipped through time anomalies into the medieval era, leading to the origin of both Mermaids and Sirens in European mythology.
2008[]
In 2008, a number of Mer Creatures traveled through a time anomaly from a futuristic shoreline, perhaps out of curiosity, emerging in a warehouse within the Isle of Dogs, London. The anomaly then closed only seconds later, preventing the Mers from returning home in any fashion. Nowhere else to go, some of the Mers traveled through the buildings' large pipe and into a canal within the Isle of Dogs. They also apparently partially flooded the warehouse and used it as a makeshift colony, where they brought abducted Human future victims such as Lucien Hope, bringing them in not only through canals but also through drains. These victims were kept in a flooded tank, though none were actually slain, leading survivors to assume they may have intended to keep them as emergency sustenance.
The Mer here turned out to be highly protective over their prisoners, and when Nick Cutter, Connor Temple and Stephen Hart discovered the locale and subsequently freed Lucien, the creatures attacked even though it cost them most of their numbers. Abby was not saved however and was taken by the MerQueen to the future when the anomaly reopened.
Unspecified Time, Future Era[]
With Abby abducted to the future, her allies traveled forward in time after her. She attempted to escape with Connor's help but this instigated the MerQueen and her entourage into launching another attack. Connor then managed to kill or at least knock unconscious one of the Mer by dropping a rock on its head while the others were brushed aside and potentially killed by the MerQueen herself. With only her left to contend with, she was gunned down by both Cutter and Stephen.
