"The Maormer are native to the island kingdom of Pyandonea, an archipelago in the southern ocean. Their ruler, King Orgnum, is said to be immortal."
— Serpent's Grotto Loading Screen, The Elder Scrolls Online

The Maormer are a species of Mer endemic to the island continent of Pyandonea, located far south of the Summerset Isles.

Physiology[]

Although mostly similar to most other Mer races, the Maormer can be distinguished like the others by their skin and eyes. In their case their eyes have become clear and milky-white while their skin is pale and colorless as if their flesh was made of white limpid jelly. Their skin has adapted chamelonic properties that is similar to the forest coupling abilities of their cousins, the Bosmer. This may or may not indicate that the Bosmer are their closest cousins.

Culture[]

The Maormer are ruled over by the deathless King Orgnum, the Aldmer who led his people into exile on Pyandonea many millennia ago. Said to be a wizard of some sort, he is not only immortal but appears to grow more youthful by the century. Orgnum may in fact be the serpent deity Satakal, a Yokudan god of everything. Any actual evidence to support this claim are unfounded in terms of the rest of the world.

The Maormer are practitioners of snake magic, using it to tame sea serpents for use as steeds and warbeasts. King Orgnum uses them as guards and occasionally as mounts, as well. Maormeri ships are decidedly insectoid in appearance, with membranous sails and a rugged chitin hull; through unknown means, tendril-mats of kelp trap all ships in Pyandonea's uncharted waters with the exception of the Maormer themselves. This may involve magic or simply a great knowledge of their own local waters to avoid getting locked up in kelp beds.

It is said that the Maormer despise porpoises as they see their seemingly blissful exuberance and joy as a sort of insult to their own harsh way of life.

Background history[]

"Like the High Elves, the Sea Elves also came from Old Aldmeris. But where the Altmer settled in the paradise of Summerset, the Maormer ended up in low, marshy, and insect-infested Pyandonea—and the Sea Elves have never forgiven the High Elves for it."

Origins[]

Ancient tapestries indicate that the Maormer most likely originated during the Merethic Era from Aldmeris, a legendary, albeit lost landscape that is said to be the home of all Elven races on Nirn. Here, an incredibly rich Aldmer named Orgnum rebelled against the local government which led to he and his followers being exiled. They were sent to Pyandonea, an island continent shrouded in a magically impenetrable mist known simply as the "Veil of Mist". Over time, Orgnum—now referred to as King Orgnum—and his followers evolved into the Maormer.

First & Second Era[]

During these two periods of time the Maormer were relentless in their attempts to conquer the neighboring Summerset Isles, ravaging the coastlines of the Altmer nearly every year for the entire span of 3,817 years that marked both Eras. Each and every one of these attacks was headed by King Orgnum himself but each and every one failed.

In 2E 486, a small Maormeri fleet was sighted off the coast of Alinor and thus King Hidellith sent his navy to give chase. Following the fleet into uncharted waters they found themselves in the middle of an ambush within reach of Pyandonea itself. This was a successful ambush and all but one ship was destroyed; this single warship made it back to Summerset and is considered to be a testament to the maritime genius of the Altmer.

Only 96 years later in 2E 582, the Three Banners War was in full swing and the Maormer found some level of control over Khenarthi's Roost, an island in the Elsweyr region thanks to a treaty with the city of Mistral. However, the island's Maormer ambassador, Ulondil, ultimately would betray this contract. During this period of time a faction of Maormer known as the Sea Vipers led attacks against the First Aldmeri Dominion through its many controlled territories.

The second Almderi Dominion would come to find a way to align themselves with the Maormer, yet despite this the Dominion allowed the various kings of Colovia to destroy Maormer outposts that were being established along the western coast of the mainland.

Third Era[]

The last documented time the outside world had any encounters with the Maormer was in 3E 110 when the alliance of the kings of Summerset, Antiochus Septim, and the Psijic Order combined the Imperial fleet, Summerset's royal navies, and the Psijic's magical prowess to destroy an invading armada from Pyandonea. It is believed that the Psijic of Artaeum's magical storm was so great that Orgnum's fleet has never recovered enough to dare another attack.
