A mammoth is a species of Elephantids in the genus Mammuthus, one of the genuses that belongs to trunked mammals called Proboscideans. Mammoths have long hair and very thick fur, with very long tusks up to 16 feet long. They lived from the Pliocene epoch, which lived over 10,000 years ago. Mammoths are closely related to Asian Elephants more than African bush elephants.
Taxonomy[]
The Huge Mammoth: A Taxonomic Guide
The mammoth is the most popular extinct species of elephantid.
Domain Eukaroyta
As a multi cellar organism, mammoths belong to the domain Eukaroyta, where other multi cellar organisms, known as “animals” are found. This species is called “The Mammoth” meaning “huge beast”
Kingdom Animalia
With the domain Eukaroyta Mammoths belong to the Kingdom Animalia. Two kingdoms usually exist, Animalia and Plantae. Mammoths are extinct living species of mammals,
Phylum Chordata
Chordates such as humans, elephants, rhinos and mammoths belong to the phylum Chordata. They are also vertebrates as scientists have found out that they belong to the phylum Chordata
Class Mammalia
Mammoths are mammals meaning they belong to the class Mammalia, Mammalia, Aves, Olfactores and Reptilia, and Insectia are all classes of the Animalia kingdom, with bonus such as Pseudomammalia and Phasmancarida
Order Proboscidea
This order belongs to all elephants and their Proboscideans relatives. Mammoths had thick fur and were very strong and intelligent. Like Elephants, mammoths were social and mourned their dead.
Family Elephantidae
Elephantidae is the only surviving family of the order Proboscidea which includes the mastodons and the mammoths.
Genus Mammuthus
The species M. primigenius is the most popular of the mammoth species. Mammoths have very long tusks.
