The Lurk Lizard is a species of chameleon found in Wonderland. As they are allied with the Emblem Heartless, it is unknown if they are indigenous to this region or not. They are very closely related to the similar Veil Lizard, as well as the Sneak Army and Stealth Sneak.

Etymology[]

Its name comes from the word "lurk", which means to wait around a location without attracting attention, referring to its ability to blend in with its background.

Physiology[]

The Lurk Lizard is covered in, by default, teal scales with their limbs striped with blue-gray zig-zags and gold bands at the shoulder, wrist, hip, and ankle. They also possess the rapidly extrudable tongue and zygodactylous feet of their brethren (in its case with two phalanges extending out front and one extending backwards). Interestingly, their claws are a light, almost lime green hue. Although they have prehensile tails like most larger chameleons, their tail curiously curls over dorsally instead of ventrally. Their jawline is smooth and holds back their very long, pink tongue. Unlike many chameleons, their eyes appear to be completely exposed and they do not appear to be capable of independent movement from each other. A set of five, very long, blue-green spines extend along their back as a method of defense against some unknown predator. They have a hunched-over stance, and when standing bipedally often will hold their arms out in front of themselves, possibly for balance.

The exact size of the species is not currently understood, due to the fact that they were recorded only as being encountered by Roxas, a humanoid of average height normally but that had taken a shrinking potion. Estimates suggest they are the size of a large dog.

Due to their involvement with the Emblem Heartless, they have their insignia emblazoned across their chest.

As with other chameleons, the Lurk Lizard can alter the color of its skin, in this case to such a degree as to appear completely invisible to the naked eye. While this is done with greater speed and effect than many other chameleon species, the process would most likely be the same. This would be a two-stage method involving the dispersion of pigment-containing organelles held within the skin itself, but also involves the usage of two superimposed skin layers that control both coloration and thermoregulation. The top layer contains a lattice of guanine nanocrystals, and by exciting this lattice the spacing between the nanocrystals can be manipulated, which in turn affects which wavelengths of light are reflected and which are absorbed. Exciting the lattice increases the distance between the nanocrystals, and the skin reflects longer wavelengths of light. Thus, in a relaxed state the crystals reflect blue and green, but in an excited state the longer wavelengths such as yellow, orange, green, and red are reflected.

Behavior[]

When attacking potential prey, the Lurk Lizards prefer to camouflage themselves and use ambush strikes to take down its foes. If the prey is too large to swallow whole, it can detach an ensnared victim (unlike many chameleons) and slash at them with their claws to subdue it. They may also spin around to swing their tail at foes in close enough range. The tail is covered in a sticky adhesive that can prevent those struck from being unable to jump or otherwise leave the ground for a short time. They also have the curious ability to shoot laser beams from their eyes, which has been noted by adventurers to disable their electronic map.

Although deadly predators, studious travels can keep track of a Lurk Lizard's location by listening to the sounds of their footsteps or by keeping a look out for their glowing eyes which can be used as a tell-tale tic indicating that it is going to use its tongue. One known problem with their physiology is that they can become paralyzed by having their tongue strikes blocked, although the genetics or behavioral adaptations that have caused this problem are unknown.
