— In-game description, Mass Effect 2 & 3

Illium dkald fish (Betta skalder) are a species of betta that were occasionally seen as an expensive aquarium fish between the years 2185 and 2186.

Background history[]

ME3 Illium Skald Fish

Shepard's Illium skald fish circa 2186.

In 2185, Commander Shepard was able to purchase a single Illium skald fish at an asari gift shop called Citadel Souvenirs on the Citadel's Zakera Ward. In 2186, if Shepard had saved Kelly Chambers, she will have rescued the fish, which has since given birth to two new members of the species. If not, Shepard could find some more members of the species being sold at Kanala Exports in the Citadel's Presidium Commons area.

Trivia[]

  • Considering the spelling of the name, their name is likely intended to translate to "poet fish" (Norse, skald or skáld) rather than "burn fish" (English, scald).
  • Illium skald fish are directly based off of real life bettas, presumably the Siamese fighting fish.
