the handsome trig is a species of trig (trigonidiinae) found in the southeastern USA north of massachusetts, excluding southern florida. handsome trigs can sometimes be mistaken for species of bombardier beetles. the reason for this is because the coloration of handsome trigs and some bombardier beetles match, and the basal antenna look like beetle mandibles. the thorax is red and its legs are pale, with dark blue/black forewings. the song of male handsome trigs soulds like rattling, broken chirp.
