Fox-squirrels (キツネリス kitsunerisu) are small, catlike creatures belonging to the Order Carnivora. Their name can be considered confusing, as they are named after foxes and squirrels but are more feline in appearance.
Evolving sometime after an apocalyptic catastrophe that befell the Earth, they are extremely stubborn creatures and are generally considered hostile and impossible to domesticate, although Nausicaä did actually succeed in taming one named Teto. This successful domestication was due to Nausicaä's connection with all living things, and this may in fact be the only way for the creature to be properly tamed.
Fox-squirrels are susceptible to both the detrimental influence of the Ohma, and the radiation of the God Warrior, to the point of death.
