Espeon (Japanese: エーフィ Eifie), the Sun Pokémon is a cat and a descendant of Eevee. It is a psychic-type Pokémon that can only evolve tamed, requiring high friendship levels with its owner/trainer and only during the Day or with a Sun Shard. Like all other eeveelutions, it is a dead end evolution with no further adaptation occurring. Like its ancestor, it is a rare find in the wild, being much more commonly found in urban locations; this likely indicates that they, too, are critically endangered, and in danger of becoming extinct in the wild.
Biology[]
Espeons are mammalians related to cats with their slender bodies, pointed ears and long tails. There is a lot of confusion they are based on foxes but these are not. Espeons also have slender legs and dainty paws. They have fine, velvety lilac fur (green in the case of shiny Pokémon) which is sensitive to allow Espeon to sense minute shifts in the air, allowing it to predict weather patterns. There are tufts of long fur along its cheeks and a small red gem embedded in its forehead in a similar manner to carbuncles. This gem boosts their psychic powers considerably. Interestingly, their irises and possible sclera are purple while the pupil itself is white. It also has a thin, forked tail which quivers when it predicts its opponent's moves.
Origin[]
Espeon appears to be based off of nekomatas/bake-neko, a species of intelligent, fork-tailed goblin cats as well as sharing the jeweled forehead traits of the carbuncle. Other species it shares traits with caracals, sphynx cats, lynxes, and fennec foxes
Name origin[]
The "Esp" portion of Espeon's name comes from the term ESP, a branch of psychic abilities while the "eon" portion means an immeasurably long time, potentially intended to hint at the actual time it takes for evolution to occur.
The Japanese name, Eifie, is a combination of エスパー esupaa (ESPer, a person with psychic powers) and フィール fiiru (feel), referring to its extraordinary sensory abilities. It is very similar to Eevee, in both writing and sound (イーブイ/エーフィ).
