Felis catus - The Overpopulated Cats of Earth
The Cat (Felis catus) is a medium, quadrupedal mammal used as pets. But have you ever wondered how these powerful, but small creatures be classified in the animal taxonomy? In this article, we propose a taxonomy for the Domestic Cat.
Kingdom: Animalia
Cats undoubtedly belongs to the Animalia kingdom, which includes all the animals in the world. Being a mammal, they have similar features to other mammals. They have a physical body and are capable of movement, which is akin to many living creatures.
Phylum: Chordata
The Chordata phylum includes all the animals with a spinal cord and a backbone. As Cats possesses a vertebral column (including skull, vertebrae, and ribs), this phylum is the most appropriate for it.
Class: Mammalia
Even though Cats are mammals, it fulfills many of the criteria necessary to be placed inside the Mammalia class. They possess some mammalian characteristics such as a large, bulky body, strong limbs, and the ability to create a strong bond with other animals.
Order: Carnivora, This encompasses most of the mammals who are carnivorous or omnivorous in nature.
Family: Felidae; This encompasses all of the felines who behave like felines in nature.
Genus: Felis: The species F. catus refers to the mammals known as "cats".
Species F. catus: The species epithet catus means about their name and the other felines in nature, either domesticated or wild. In conclusion, cats are medium, but powerful felines.
