Devouring Swarms are a species of biting midge that are indigenous to the Burrwitch in the realm of Cairn. They appear to have been stirred up and agitated by the invasion of the Aethereals. Very similar to their closely-related cousins in the realm of Sancutary—the Itchies—they prove to be of little threat to adventures on their own, they can sap their strength and leave them open to attacks by more dangerous monstrosities.
In the marshes, Devouring Swarms are most often found in conjuncture with Giant Mosquitoes, presumably to either take advantage of whatever hapless creatures that the mosquitoes themselves bring down or as protection against their own would-be predators, if not both. However, in the farmland fields of Homestead along the border of the pine barrens the Devouring Swarms instead tend to ally themselves with the local Dermapterans. Again like Itchies, they seem to utilize a powerful hive mind, and the entire swarm can be slain with just the right strike.
