Cryomancers are an infraspecies of Modern Humans endemic to the wastelands of Outworld notable for their ability to control, shape, and manipulate ice.
Physiology[]
Cryomancers are descended from Modern Humans and as such are very similar in appearance to them. Differences include very pale skin and whitened eyes, as well as an internal temperature of around 52° Fahrenheit (-47° Celsius). Half-breed Cryomancers do not naturally possess these traits, but it appears that contact with the Dragon Medallion unlocks their true potential. Their lifespans are unknown.
Cryomancers have very cold blood and this may or may not effect the ability they are best known for and in fact named after: All Cryomancers can control the moisture in the air around their own bodies and cool it into compacted ice, which they can then manipulate and control. This power, when enough focus or mastery is used, allows them to even create inanimate items around them, such as armor (including face masks and sheets of ice covering their arms), weaponry, or "clone" traps.
The abilities of the Cryomancers appear to be able to be passed down to others, and this may actually transform the new wielder into a Cryomancer, themselves. This was known to have happened with Sareena, a demon who was granted the powers by Blaze in the events leading up to Armageddon.
Background history[]
The past of the Cryomancer race is blurry at best. At some point during Shao Kahn's reign as emperor of Outworld, he apparently had the majority of the Cryomancers eradicated for unknown reasons, thus inadvertently leaving no known pure Cryomancers in the present day. Those that survived the purge on Outworld appear to have fled to Earth, where the only known members all joined with the Lin Kuei, a guild of assassins residing in Artika, a frozen wasteland found hidden within the nation of China.
Known individuals[]
Of all known Cryomancers, none have been pure bloods, with the possible exception of the Original Sub-Zero, whom had trained Shunjinko and is an ancestor to the later Sub-Zero brothers.
Trivia[]
- Because of the vast popularity of the Mortal Kombat franchise, several characters in other media have been created as parodies or references to Sub-Zero. Because of this and their existing ice powers, they can be presumed to be, by extension, Cryomancers as well, despite originating from other media universes. This includes the professional wrestler Glacier and the character Absolute Zero from Adventure Quest Worlds.
- Queen Elsa from Disney's Frozen has been theorized to be a potential Cryomancer by game and film theorists due to her own ice-based powers, and this led to a collection of memes depicting her as such. Thus she is considered a potential Cryomancer for the sake of this article.
