Chao are a domestic species of fairy-like creatures from Sonic the Hedgehog.
Biology[]
Appearance[]
They are child-like blue creature with teardrop-shaped heads and pink wings. They are often considered cute and adorable. They are notably able to absorb the traits of any animal they come into contact with, altering their own DNA in the process.
Speech patterns[]
Chao make a variety of noises. Though they normally make almost baby-like sounds, they also commonly say "Chao", which is likely where they get their name from. One particular Chao, Cheese, has shown an ability to speak the Mobian language.
Metamorphosis[]
Depending on the fruits (Hero or Dark) they're fed, and who raises them, they can become one of two types of Chao: Hero Chao or Dark Chao. Hero Chao are white and angelic in appearance, having what looks to be a halo, while Dark Chao are demonic and have a black and red coloration. Whatever form they mature into, they still retain their cuteness.
Reproduction[]
Despite being sexless, Chao can lay eggs.
Lifespan[]
Chao live short but sweet lives. However, should a Chao receive enough love and be happy and content at death, they will reform back into an egg and hatch again, reincarnated as a new Chao.
Background history[]
In ancient times, the Chao lived in peace around the temple grounds of the Master Emerald, where they were protected by Chaos, a mutated Chao serving as both their guardian as well as deity. When the then-current chieftain of the Knuckles Clan of echidnas, Chief Pachacamac, greedily decided to invade the territory of the Chao to obtain the power of the Chaos Emeralds for themselves, Chaos absorbed the emeralds to become Perfect Chaos. It is said that in this form he nearly destroyed the world and was only stopped by the echidna Tikal. The two would come to inhabit the Master Emerald itself.
Millennia later, Dr. Eggman cracked the Master Emerald and this released Chaos, as well as Tikal. At this point the Chao seemed to be little more than animals and were easily domesticated and kept within designated "Chao Gardens" by the sapient inhabitants of the planet. Chaos was tricked into taking on its Perfect Chaos form once more but was stopped successfully by Super Sonic. With that Chaos and Tikal returned to the now-repaired Master Emerald.

- The word "Chao" is both singular and plural, like sheep or moose.
- Chao were originally considered to be named "Chicka Monkeys" to avoid confusion with the related character Chaos, but this idea was later dropped.
