True Toads are members of the family Bufonidae, and are the only group of frogs where all members are referred to as "toads".

They can inhabit a variety of environments, anything from arid regions to rainforests. Most will lay their eggs paired in strings that hatch into tadpoles though the Nectophrynoides have their eggs hatch directly into miniature toadlets.

They are toothless creatures with a generally warty appearance, as one might expect from a toad. When stressed they will excrete an alkaloid poison from glands behind their heads. This poison can have psychoactive effects. Male have a Bidder's organ, which can become an active ovary under the right conditions, effectively turning the male into a female.
