Status Critically Endangered or Extinct

Bubs are an extremely rare species of goggle-eyed Goofangs, a type of Cheep Cheep. In their juvenile stage, they seem to only inhabit the Dire, Dire Docks, but have not been spotted here for years. However, it appears that Cheep Cheeps have come to inhabit the area instead, leaving the fate of the Bubs up in the air. Adults, known as Bubbas, were formerly spotted in the waters around Tiny-Huge Island, Happening Space on Yoshi's Island, and several other areas around the Mushroom World, notably around several golf courses in the regions of Boo Valley, Koopa Park, Luigi's Garden, Peach's Castle, Shy Guy Desert, Toad Highlands, and even around Mario's Star, a section of the realm that has torn away from the main planet and now floats in space.

Unlike other Cheep Cheep counterparts, the adult forms of both genders are referred to as "Bubbas", as those with what appears to be shades over their eyes are considered to definitively be male, and ones without are either thought to be not-fully-matured males or simply females. Since females have not been seen in any other regard, the latter is assumed to be the case here, given the Cheep Cheeps' penchant for sexual dimorphism.

Physiology[]

Bubs are golden scaled fish, related to both Cheep Cheeps and other Freshwater Bass, despite living in a marine environment.

Unlike true goofangs, Bubs and other goggle-eyed goofangs have developed a goggle-like structure to protect their eyes from their sensitivity to water. This structure appears very similar to actual goggles, and may be formed by some sort of calcified silica. As they mature, these lenses darken for unknown reasons, although it may have to do with the overall weakness of their eyes and more surface area being exposed to the sunlight.

They are weak, aimless creatures, and do not actively adventurers that happen to be exploring their waters. They will however bite or otherwise injure any person foolish enough to come into close contact with one, likely as a defensive maneuver. No known method to kill a Bub has been reported, as several items that normally could kill a Cheep Cheep are not found in the areas they have been spotted in.

As they mature, they grow in size and their goggles darken or disappear, which is assumed to be a form of sexual dimorphism, although it may also be part of the maturation process. Those that drop off could possibly do so like baby teeth or simply being reabsorbed into the body to reuse the nutrients necessary to build the structure in the first place. These adult Bubs, known as Bubbas, are noticeably more aggressive than the juveniles, and look quite similar to a mature male Cheep Cheep, which is known as a Boss Bass. They are assumed to be mouthbrooders just like their True Cheep Cheep cousins, though no direct evidence of this has been recorded.
