"Bloody Wasps are a strange breed of flora which upon reaching a certain level of maturity will suddenly snap its own stem to pursue potential prey. Be wise that its small size belies its deadly nature."
— Vacotor Database, Terran translation

Bloody Wasps are the very small but active seeds of the Hivebush, a species non-sapient deathberries indigenous to an unspecified planet. As deathberries, they are related to both the Gargleberry and Doomberry.

They are extremely important in their home biomes, providing a large amount of the pollination for lower-oriented flora.

Physiology[]

The matured bush form of a Bloody Wasp, more properly referred to as the Hivebush, is a shaggy bush covered in a multitude of green leaves. The trunk spirals tightly, which means that it takes longer for the Hivebush to grow to full height.

The bushes will begin to bud in mid-spring, with these new buds forming tiny, flower-like extensions. Existing Bloody Wasps will then pollinate these flowers on hives that are not their own during territorial disputes. Once pollinated the flowers adapt into small, round, red berries whose leaves cluster in such a way as to form a pair of makeshift wings and a weave of leaves that form a sharp and stabilized piercing "beak shield".

Bloody Wasps congregate within their home Hivebush, hence the name, and usually hide on the inside of the bush under its foliage unless they are attempting to ambush prey.

Defenses[]

Bloody Wasps' main defense is their aggression when irritated, but they are mainly intended to die to produce new Hivebushes and propagate the species further. They are capable of flight, albeit weak, and can also glide at a bit more accurate rate if higher up in towards the canopy.

Distribution[]

Habitat[]

These deathberries are found within the sun-dappled, high-canopy forests that cover large swathes of their home planet. They are usually out-competed by Gargleberries along the edges of the forest where they begin to thin out and transition into grasslands.

Behavior[]

Diet[]

Like most floral lifeforms, the Hivebush form is autotrophic and utilizes photosynthesis to produce much of its energy. However, once in free-roaming Bloody Wasp form, they convert into hypercarnivores until they have died off.

Reproduction[]

Pollination occurs when warring hives invade one another, inadvertently leading to the transfer of genetic material. This will produce berries that will mature into more Bloody Wasps. Bloody Wasps remain active until their death, which then leads to the seeds hidden inside the berries to germinate in the ground to grow more Hivebushes.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The Bloody Wasp was created when creating a variety of Killer Tomatoes for a Galactic Adventure Somarinoa was working on in SPORE; it was created simply by drastically shrinking the much larger KT just finished to start a tiny type.
