Hybrids[]
In 2019, research confirmed that narlugas—a hybrid between a female narwhal and a male beluga hypothesized for decades—truly existed thanks to genetic sequencing. It should be noted however that there are rules to hybrid naming conventions and that technically it would be a belwhal as the father's species comes first and the mother's comes last. However, it is thought that the hybrid name will remain due to decades in the public consciousness.
