The reign of the Great Solar Empire saw the rise of an Nietzschian counterculture dedicated to the creation of a new humanhuman race through hereditary nanomachines. Despite the best efforts of the Empire to terminate it, the movement outlasted the Empire itself, free to scrounge Earth's remains. [1]
Many distinct tribes of posthuman wander the dying earth. Their history has separated them from the common methodologies, goals and technology that other races possess. Posthumans are a dangerous nomadic kind, known as alien raiders towards the collapsed remnants of the empire. Their belief is that waiting for the competition to die is just a matter of waiting, but are eager to keep them down in the meanwhile.
The Asura race is the most successful group in the quest for posthuman ascension, a bloodline that lost the least humanity when evolutionary pressure designed them to be guerrilla fighters against the Empire. Asura society can be described as "stratocratic", but this overestimates their interest in societal order.
Like other posthuman civilizations, they have a secret recipe for "grade-N nanotechne", a more monstrous form of nanotechnological metal to make their equipment from. This grade of nanotechne is the secret to creating exo-suits, biomimetic armor that merges with the wearer for greater protection. Asura designs of exo-suits in particular emphasize their exoskeletal nature.
Asuras are the only posthumanity with taboos against unnecessary cruelty towards people or animals. This could be related to their euthanizing of fully regressed antinirvanists [2]. They are also the only posthuman race with an extensive idea of modernity, showing a more "nomadic" kind of primitivism in their clothing.
Castes[]
Kalakeya[]
A posthuman cyborg of intricately fused flesh and metal, descended from a group of transhuman extremists who infused themselves with self-adapting hereditary nanomachines that shaped them into a race of strong-willed, territorial, and barbaric beings well-suited for a ruined world. It is a simple-minded specimen resembling a sinewy humanoid. It has pointed teeth with large-powerful tusks, and it has curving talons on its hands and feet.
The only caste of Asura with a finite lifespan. A short one too, up to 50 years. They are not allowed to hold any institutional power, even to the point of being drugged into accepting this [3] to be used as both cannon fodder and borderline slaves. Earlier versions of The Long Night called them "broken fext" and didn't give them sexes.
Asura[]
A powerful posthuman cyborg of intricately fused flesh and metal, descended from a group of transhuman extremists who infused themselves with self-adapting hereditary nanomachines that shaped them into a race of strong-willed, territorial, and barbaric beings well-suited for a ruined world. Its body is uncannily perfect, like a sculpture. Its teeth have tiger-like canines, and it has pointed claws on its hands and feet.
The most common caste of "true" Asuras. They, and all higher castes, possess superior memory, physical traits and the ability to completely regenerate their bodies. Higher subcastes of Asura can be noted by their redundant sets of arms, up to having eight, and even greater physical ability.
There are three variant forms of Asura that are equal to the basic Asura with the exception of having one universally superhuman trait:
Nivatakavacha[]
An agility-specialized posthuman cyborg of intricately fused flesh and metal, descended from a group of transhuman extremists who infused themselves with self-adapting hereditary nanomachines that shaped them into a race of strong-willed, territorial, and barbaric beings well-suited for a ruined world. Its body is uncannily perfect, like a sculpture. It has a slender body and moves with grace and precision. Its teeth have tiger-like canines, and it has pointed claws on its hands and feet.
[]
A strength-specialized posthuman cyborg of intricately fused flesh and metal, descended from a group of transhuman extremists who infused themselves with self-adapting hereditary nanomachines that shaped them into a race of strong-willed, territorial, and barbaric beings well-suited for a ruined world. Its body is uncannily perfect, like a sculpture. It is incredibly muscular and radiates overpowering strength. Its teeth have tiger-like canines, and it has pointed claws on its hands and feet.
Shukra[]
A toughness-specialized posthuman cyborg of intricately fused flesh and metal, descended from a group of transhuman extremists who infused themselves with self-adapting hereditary nanomachines that shaped them into a race of strong-willed, territorial, and barbaric beings well-suited for a ruined world. Its body is uncannily perfect, like a sculpture. It has a rotund body resembling an ancient eastern sage, armored with blow-diffusing internal nanotechne. Its teeth have tiger-like canines, and it has pointed claws on its hands and feet.
Notes[]
- The Asura race was originally known as the Fext before The Long Night's 2.5 update, which consolidated many posthuman races into the civilizations of Asura, Rakshasa, or Yaksha.
